Tackling a Long-Term Project

Are you a new Writing Center tutor planning on doing something for the school for your badge project, but a bit nervous on how to start? Well here’s a step by step process that I used whenever I was stuck!

For badge projects, I always wanted to help the school in some way. I always saw room for improvements, even if it was just letting the school do some team bonding activity. However, I often felt confused and stuck when I was starting my project. I didn’t know what to do, where to start, what I needed… I was stressing out over it! But, what I had to do first was to;

1) Calm down.

Stressing out over this wasn’t going to get me anywhere. I know it’s tricky and it’s even a little… not fun to plan. But I was the one who wanted to do this, right? So might as well stop sitting around and keeping my head down on the table and focus on the task at hand.

2) Plan things out.

Obviously, you need to have some sort of idea on what to do first and what your project is. But where do you go from there? Well, let’s maybe think about getting your project out to the school. If it’s something big and you might need approval from the school, don’t be afraid to contact one of the SLC principals! You can also go to Mrs. Feliks, she has connections to the principals if you’re too worried about emailing them. Also, think about how you could advertise your project! I typically made a poster, announcements, and even a Skytime lesson to really get the word out there! If you think of anything else you can do, try it out! The more people that know, the better the project will turn out.

3) Create deadlines.

This can be for yourself or for the school, depending on what your project is. Deadlines can give you a more broader idea of when to do what and block you from lazing around so much (procrastination doesn’t help you, surprisingly). It can also help you be more motivated to get things done by a certain time!

4) Have someone help you!

Now this isn’t REQUIRED, but it’s really beneficial to have some sort of support with your project. You always do, but having some sort of teammate can also be more helpful. Especially if you get overwhelmed easily.

There are many other things that can help you with your badge project, and you can always ask for help from Mrs. Feliks or other Writing Center tutors. Just believe in yourself, don’t procrastinate too much, and have a clear mind. It’s not as hard as you think!
