The Pinkerton Agency, a pivotal player in American history, may not be a household name, but its influence is undeniable. Perhaps you’ve encountered them as the nosy agents in Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2. With a rich history dating back to the 1850s, what led this notorious institution to make its home in Ann Arbor?
Originally based in Chicago, The Pinkerton National Detective Agency had humble beginnings. It was founded by Allen Pinkerton — a barrel maker by trade. Unimpressed with Chicago’s state-funded police force he decided to make his own detective agency. Pinkerton was a virtuous man who believed in upholding the law but also believed in greater justice. He was a strong abolitionist and his house was a stop along the underground railroad. “I have assisted in security and freedom for the fugitive slave, no matter at what hour, under what circumstances, or at what cost, the act was to be performed” Meltzer and Mensch. He was also good friends with legendary abolitionist John Brown. “(John Brown) was my bosom friend, and more than one dark night has found us working earnestly together on behalf of the fleeing bondsman striving for his liberty.” Meltzer and Mensch. He also hired the first woman detective Kate Warne in 1856 who later led the exclusively female division of Pinkerton detectives. Finally, one of his most famous acts was foiling the assassination attempt on President Lincoln in 1861. So how did this amazing progressive and national hero fall from grace?
Following Allen Pinkerton’s death on July 1, 1884, his sons assumed control of the company, ushering in a new era marked by controversy. The Pinkertons became synonymous with labor union strikes, their agents infiltrating unions, providing security, and even resorting to violence to quell strikes. These actions stoked tensions between workers and employers, culminating in violent clashes, notably the Homestead Strike of 1892. The public outcry against Pinkerton’s methods led to legislation curbing their involvement in labor disputes.
So what? Why are they in Ann Arbor and what do they do now? Now they mostly provide private security services and onsite protection. They recently decided to shift toward cybersecurity, which is probably the reason for their relocation from New Jersey. “Ann Arbor is the perfect location from which to grow our Michigan business and strategically plan and execute on our global growth strategy…this is a community of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship and the talent pool is outstanding. We are thrilled to be here and look forward to immersing ourselves in Southeast Michigan,” says Jack Zahran CEO of Pinkerton.
