Love Deluxe is the fourth studio album by English band Sade released on October 26 1992. Initially it was a commercial success that charted in the top 10 in several countries worldwide and appeared in all time album rankings for Rolling Stone and Apple Music. The album was noted to deviate from Sade’s signature sound, straying from their live instrumentation into a modernised aesthetic using programmed drumming. In 1992 the members of Sade – Sade Adu, Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Denman – re-entered the studio after a break following their tour for their previous album Stronger Than Pride (1988). They worked on the album for a total of four months. Adu explained that the album’s title comes from her own concept of love: “The idea is that it’s one of the few luxury things that you can’t buy” she said in an interview. On the songwriting process, she mentioned “I collect ideas in my head all the time. The things that most depress you are often the things that you write about.”
I started listening to Sade when I heard their songs ‘Kiss of Life’ in a cafe and ‘By Your Side’ when I was watching “Sex and the City.” My favorite song that they composed and my favorite song in general is ‘Like a Tattoo’ because of the inspiration behind it. In an interview with Red Bull in 1992 Sade Adu stated “That song is about a man who has been in Vietnam, but it’s not really about Vietnam. It’s about war and killing somebody.” The song explores how the man bears an emotional burden and guilt like a permanent tattoo on his soul. It captures the essence of what it means to be trapped in a cycle of shame and regret over past actions and the hardship to overcome those sentiments. These particular lyrics speak out to me the most:
“The light shot diamonds from his eyes”
“Hungry for life”
“And thirsty for the distant river”
These lyrics encapsulate the hunger for life and a deep, persistent longing for fulfillment, meaning, and a future even in the face of emotional turmoil. This single lyric can symbolize either the man who is killing or the man who is going to be killed.
However the best recepted song on the album was ‘No Ordinary Love’ due to its R&B/Rock fusion with metal-like riffs. In the same interview with Red Bull after being asked what her favorite song on the album Adu stated “If I had to pick one it would be ‘Cherish the Day,’ but I don’t know why. I just like it. I think it’s really quite deep, but at the same time it’s a love song. It’s funny, most of the songs I can’t tell you if I really like them or not; it’s really hard to be objective about it. But, ‘Cherish the Day,’ I know if I heard it on the radio I would say, “God, this is good. Who is this?” This particular song is a genre of R&B and radio format called quiet storm. It’s performed in a smooth, romantic, and jazz-influenced style. It was named after the title song on Smokey Robinson’s 1975 album A Quiet Storm.
Following the release of Love Deluxe, the band took a seven year hiatus. During this time Adu came under media scrutiny with rumors of depression and addiction and later gave birth to her first child. Matthewman, Denman, and Hale pursued other projects and formed the band Sweetback. After her personal hiatus, Sade released the album Lovers Rock in 2000 which was influenced by her teenage years. The band then released the album Soldier of Love in 2010 and was reported to be recording new music as of 2022, though plans have been uncertain.
