Tips and Tricks for starting a club

Starting a club can be very challenging; here are some tips and tricks to help you get a head start in the process!

Work with others

I recently started the Fishing Club at Skyline.  At first, I thought I could do everything on my own – Send out emails, make Instagram posts, and set up for club events and meetings. I was wrong. I had way too much on my plate and couldn’t do it all at once. I had to get help. I needed a team. I talked with two of my close friends, and they agreed to help me with the club. I gave them roles where I needed help. It was a big challenge to have the first meeting go successfully, but it worked out in the end when I got help and worked together with others.

Be Prepared

Make sure you go into club meetings knowing what you’re going to teach or do. This could require planning, buying materials, making a slide deck, etc. The list goes on and on. It’s best to plan a few days ahead so people know when and where the club meetings are, ensuring that everyone knows. For example, if you plan to meet on Fridays, you should send out emails and post a day or two early. This will give you enough time to get everything you need and make things much more organized.

Use your resources

When starting a club, it’s very helpful to know your resources and to use them. For me, this was a very significant part of my process when I first became interested. Knowing the resources I could use gave me many opportunities for new ideas, events, and things I didn’t know of that could have helped me before. One of them was being a member of the Learning Center. This gave me a place where I could get support in the process, whether it was starting a fundraiser, organizing meetings, or just brainstorming new ideas. And is a place I can still go to help today.

Just know, depending on what your club is, resources may differ, but they are very helpful in the end!  Don’t be afraid to ask for help. The hardest part is to start.
