Key to Getting out of a Reading Slump

Are you a person who loves reading but can’t remember the last time you felt the urge to pick up a book. a Well you are definitely not the only person who has experienced the struggle to get back into reading, every person that has an interest in books still sometimes struggles to pick them up. Recently I got out of a horrible reading slump and I learned some tips to help you get back into reading:

1: Pick up a good book

I know this sounds like a no brainer but in full honesty most of my reading slumps are caused by the book that I am reading. Even if the book is good it may not be the genre that you secretly want to read. Whenever I feel the urge to pick up a book fading I start reading a book by one of my favorite authors because I know the writing will hook me in right away. I would recommend rereading a book that you loved when you are in a reading slump because it only takes one good book to get out of the slump!

2:Make it part of your routine

When I get into a reading slump it only gets worse as time goes on, and this is because I fall more and more out of habit with reading. Now instead of letting it get worse I try to set aside 20 minutes a night to read. When I am in a slump I never want to pick up a book because I “don’t have time,” but once I learned that you don’t need to be reading for an insane amount of time, I started reading more and more at night and it became part of my routine. If you slowly weave reading into your day, you will get in the habit of it and actually want to read.

3: Put down your phone

In class or at home when I had free time I (like many other teenagers) would pick up my phone and start to scroll. But once I completed the first two steps (finding a good book and getting into the habit of reading it) I started to read more when I had 10 minutes left in class or an extra hour before I went out with friends. Spending the time that you would have spent scrolling reading really causes you to finish a ton of books. This step is added to really add more time for you to read your book.

The main root to a reading slump is falling out of the habit of reading and not having the motivation to fall back in and the only solution is making reading a daily habit again. These steps will do just that, and this is coming from a person who has been in more reading slumps than I can count.
