Performance arts: Joys and… more

One of the greatest joys of being a student at Skyline High School is our amazing performance arts department. Balancing co-curriculars that you love with school can at times be exhausting and exceedingly difficult. That said, don’t ever let anybody discourage you from following a dream to be on a stage under lights. As someone well familiar with a life lacking in music like that of Skyline’s choir program or performances like those from our theater, I’d say it applies to many people that art would make their life a better place. Every student who’s been a part of a concert, a show or production could tell you that they have made incredible friends. There is a level of personal growth that you find in an arts program, dare I say, especially in high school, that lets you grow as a person more than anything else. So if anybody reading  this needs the last bit of encouragement to go audition, to go try out, to find their people: let this be your sign. There will always be a space for you, no matter where you are, no matter who you are, and no matter why you joined. So for your future self, allow yourself the joy and perhaps the exhaustion, of making beautiful connections and beautiful art. There’s a reason each senior has to graduate with a half credit in the Arts.

Because when you walk out the doors of your high school for the last time it won’t be just the grades you remember or the numbers or the percentages, it will be the lovely people you got to know along the way. What better way to get to know people than through art, the most human of any endeavor.

All things considered, auditioning for the first time can be nerve wracking. So, how do you get over the jitters and show your best first impression?

A lot of auditions have multiple parts, Mainly the first audition & then the callbacks. Sometimes this means dance auditions, music auditions or monologues. The best tip is to practice ahead of time, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Performing an audition in front of friends can be a smoother introduction to an audience. And the bottom line is to be calm, believe in yourself and understand that every individual has something special to offer. You’re the best person at being you!
