Equity
We define equity in the Learning Center as giving everyone the tools they need, wherever they’re at.
The Learning Center’s mission is to reduce systemic inequities in the education system.
We will:
- Personalize the experience for each tutee, meeting them where they are at academically.
- Get to know each tutee personally – we are peers first, tutors second.
- Learn and grow along with those we tutor.
- Believe that every idea is valuable.
- Reject the idea that students need to be ‘fixed’ or ‘saved’.
- Embrace the fact that everyone is learning and needs to have support.
- Respect a person’s chosen first name and pronouns at all times in and out of the Learning Center.
Access
We define access as the continual endeavor to remove barriers to tutees coming to the Learning Center.
We will:
- Promote to every student.
- Expand tutoring access in classrooms, online, and in the Learning Center.
- Be available to help every person that enters the Learning Center.
- Resolve conflicts with each other and with our tutees through restorative justice.
- Maintain a safe space for everyone in the Learning Center.
- Help and support every student.
- Publish and amplify all student voices in order to encourage them to speak out against injustices.
We will discuss this statement and its alignment with our values each year and revise it as needed based on the feedback we receive. We understand that the definitions of equity and access are complex, and that this statement will always be changing.
