Don’t Wait Until Summer

During the school year, students have a lot going on. Between schoolwork, jobs, and spending time with family and friends, it can be hard to find time to do anything outside of school. However, I think it’s important for students to make time for some kind of activity or to go outside every day, even if it is only for a small amount of time.

School takes up most of the day, and after getting home, it can be really easy to go home and immediately get on your phone or do homework. While homework is important, students also need time to take a break. Going outside, going for a walk, playing a sport, or even just sitting outside can be a good way to take your mind off school for a minute to give yourself a second to breathe.

There are lots of different activities that people can do depending on what they enjoy. Some people play sports, while others do clubs, play music, and more. You don’t have to join a competitive team or have a specific hobby to do something. Even going on a walk with a friend, taking your dog outside, or playing a game in your backyard counts.

Activities can also be a good way to spend time with your friends. During the school year, it can feel like you only really see your friends at school, especially when everyone has a different schedule. Doing something together gives you a chance to actually spend time with them without worrying about an assignment or an upcoming test. Sometimes you have a huge assignment the next day, a test to study for, or a practice that takes up every afternoon during the week.

I’m not saying everyone needs to go outside for an hour every single day. Sometimes you just need to get your work done and go to bed. But I do think students should try to make time for themselves when they can. School is important, but it shouldn’t be the only thing that you do. Students need time to relax, spend time with people they care about, and do the things they actually enjoy.  Most people just wait until summer to do everything they enjoy, but that doesn’t really make sense. There is always going to be homework, tests, assignments, work, and responsibilities. You have to find a balance to make your schedule work and make time to get active and take breaks. Even if it’s only for a little bit.
