While the temperatures are reaching the 80’s for the first time all year, the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors still have another week of school. However, the majority of people are already looking forward to summer and not focusing on this final home stretch before summer. Summer offers students much-needed time off from school and allows them to sleep in late. While students are looking forward to having school off in the summer, there is still one more week left in the school year, and finals are quickly approaching.
Finals are in less than a week and occur on June 5th, 8th, and 9th. Some students don’t have finals on all of the days, as AP classes have finished and there is no material left to learn, so they took their finals early. Marcos Salazar-Esquivel, however, still has some upcoming exams: “Finals are approaching, so I have to lock in and study even though I have trips upcoming in the summer.” Salazar-Esquivel is in a similar situation as a lot of students are taking trips right after summer starts or are taking trips before summer even ends, and have to take finals earlier.
After finals are over, there is no more schoolwork for people to focus on during the school year. In the summer, students are able to focus more on their passions and interests than they were able to during the school year. Gyms will be crowded and are a popular place to go in the summertime, so Khudr Al-Shafey plans on “Being locked in and going to the gym every day that he can.” Al-Shafey, collaborating with his mosque, also plans on cooking food for homeless people to better his fellow citizens. While not everyone may go to the gym or cook food for homeless people, many students have similar plans for things in the summer, like hanging out with friends, going to the pool, and going to sports practices.
Summer is a great season and a lovely time off from school, but it is a long break, so many students try to take classes online or at WCC to make sure that they don’t forget what they learned over the whole school year. For example, Eshaan Tikekar was “planning on taking college classes at WCC over the summer to get further ahead in his learning, but decided not to as he wanted to gain new experiences and learn outside of the classroom instead.” While he ended up not deciding on taking classes over the summer, the idea of adding classes at WCC over the summer to students’ schedules is a very common idea that many people have.
Nonetheless, summer is a great season and time of year with no school and a lot of freedom, just make sure that you prepare and finish your finals before becoming too excited about summer.
